What is sumo anyway?

Sumo is the oldest sport in Japan. Two RIKISHI (Sumo wrestlers) compete by pushing and grappling with each other on the ring, a circular ring of earth filled with dirt. The winner is the one who pushes his opponent’s body out of the ring or puts all but the soles of his feet on the ring!

Rikishi have a distinctive appearance, with their hair tied up in a bun and a mawashi, a kind of loincloth, around their waists. Their large bodies are impressive, with an average height of 184.8 centimeters and an average weight of 161.7 kilograms! Not only Japanese but also foreign wrestlers from Mongolia, Russia, Bulgaria, China, and other countries are active in the sport.
