“Yodoyabashi Gate Tower,” a New Landmark in Yodoyabashi, Osaka

Hello, I’m Rina, a writer for Kodawari Times.
Yodoyabashi is known as an office district in Osaka lined with banks and corporate headquarters. With a history of development as the economic heart of Osaka, the area is home to many retro buildings and historic landmarks. In recent years, with the opening of numerous new hotels, it has also become a bustling tourist destination.
In this article, I’ll introduce “Yodoyabashi Gate Tower,” a large-scale mixed-use complex that recently opened in Yodoyabashi. Be sure to check out my recommendations for souvenir shops and dining spots.

Yodoyabashi Gate Tower Opens

True to its nickname, “Osaka, the City of Water,” Osaka—where water transportation has long been the backbone of the city’s development—has many place names that include the word “Hashi/Bashi (bridge),” and even today, there are more than 700 bridges.

Yodoyabashi, Osaka's business district

Yodoyabashi, considered one of Osaka’s five major bridges, spans the Tosabori River and carries Midosuji, Osaka’s main thoroughfare. The name “Yodoyabashi” derives from the fact that it was built with private funds by “Yodoya,” a wealthy merchant of the Edo period. This historic area has long flourished as the cultural, economic, and administrative center of Osaka.

A New Landmark: Yodoyabashi Gate Tower

A new landmark, the “Yodoyabashi Gate Tower,” has been unveiled at the gateway to Midosuji—a location truly worthy of being called the prime spot in the Yodoyabashi area. After 20 years since the redevelopment project began in 2006, the tower officially opened on July 9, 2026.

This large-scale mixed-use building features a commercial zone on the first basement level through the second floor, office floors on the third through ninth and 11th through 27th floors, and a public contribution complex on the 11th floor.
Ahead of the opening, Kodawari Times attended the grand opening event.
Here, we introduce some highly recommended shops, including those making their debut in Osaka and new business formats, each with its own unique character.

CAFÉ & DINING HOKKYOKUSEI

CAFÉ & DINING Hokkyokusei

“Hokkyokusei” is a long-established Western-style restaurant known as the birthplace of omurice. As part of a new concept, they’ve opened a full-service restaurant where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, coffee, and dinner all day long.

In addition to their signature omurice, we highly recommend the chef’s special lunch, which is available in limited quantities. That day’s menu featured a hamburger steak. The juicy meat paired perfectly with the rich demi-glace sauce.

Limited-Quantity “Chef's Special” Lunch

We also recommend the new omelet rice gratin on the menu at CAFÉ & DINING HOKKYOKUSEI. It’s a luxurious omelet rice topped with plenty of cheese and white sauce. You can choose between chicken and mushrooms as the filling. It’s piping hot, so please be careful not to burn yourself.

New Menu Item: Omelet Rice Gratin

Another highlight is that you can enjoy sweets, drinks, and other café offerings here. The “Hokkyokusei Special Mixed Juice,” a famous Osaka specialty, is a carefully crafted drink packed with the concentrated sweetness of fruit. With terrace seating available, why not take a break and enjoy the view of Midosuji?

OSAKA KANBEI Seafood,Yakitori Gril&Sake

A new concept from the Wagaya Group, beloved in Kitahama for 15 years. The restaurant offers a wide variety of carefully crafted dishes made with fresh seafood sourced daily from the market.
During dinner, you can leisurely enjoy sushi, fresh sashimi, charcoal-grilled chicken, and more, paired with sake.

The sashimi platter is truly luxurious! The thickly sliced sashimi is fresh, satisfying, and delicious. I recommend trying it not only with soy sauce but also with salt or umeboshi paste to enjoy a variety of flavors.

At lunchtime, you can enjoy seafood rice bowls and set meals. The meal comes with all-you-can-eat rice served in a traditional wooden rice tub and raw eggs. Since the restaurant mainly features counter seating, you can enjoy an open kitchen atmosphere. There are also private rooms with views of Midosuji Avenue where you can relax and unwind.
