In Nanao City, Ishikawa, which I introduced in my previous article, there is the famous hot spring resort of Wakura Onsen.
I made onsen egg(onsen tamago) here this time, and I’ll report on how I made it!
Where is Wakura Onsen?
Wakura Onsen is located in Nanao City, Ishikawa.
It is known as a “luxury hot spring resort” in Japan.
There is a very famous ryokan called Kagaya, which is often voted the best hotel in Japan.
As you can see on the map, Wakura Onsen is facing the sea, so it is a hot spring with a high salt content.
When I tried to drink the hot spring water that was labeled “drinkable,” it was very salt!!!!!!!
Now let’s make some Onsen egg(Onsen tamago)!
Onsen egg means “hot spring egg” when written in Japanese kanji.
Yes, they’re eggs made in hot springs!
*By the way, “egg” is called “tamago” in Japanese.
There is a spot where you can make onsen tamago (hot spring eggs) in Wakura Onsen Town, so let’s get started.
This time, a friend who lives near Wakura Onsen showed us around!
There is a spot in the center of the hot spring town where they make onsen eggs.
We went to visit them over the New Year’s vacation, so they were decorated with New Year’s decorations. So cute!
If you look at the instructions on how to make an onsen eggs, you will also find instructions in foreign languages.
It seems that there are a lot of foreign tourists in Wakura Onsen.
I started cooking right away.
Eggs are available at nearby supermarkets and convenience stores, so buy them in advance.
By the way, I think supermarkets have packs of 6 to 12.
Note that they are not sold individually.
Put them in a colander, submerge them in the hot spring, and wait.
We brought a colander with us, but there was also a colander provided.
Wait for 15 minutes for onsen eggs and 20 minutes for boiled eggs.
We wanted to make it “TKG(rice with egg)” , so we made it a little shorter, 12 minutes.
If you’re going to eat them on the spot, boiled eggs might be a better choice!
Now that it’s finished, I went to my friend’s house and cracked an egg over some freshly cooked rice. Looks so yummy!
When you hear the word “onsen egg”, you may think it tastes salty, but it actually doesn’t have any flavor.
Seasoning with soy sauce or salt is a must.
However, I think it has a slightly mellower flavor than making it with regular hot water.
For boiled eggs, I think they taste better with salt or mayonnaise.
Oh yeah, I made a video of the onsen tamago making process! I hope you can get a feel for it.
If making them is too much work… you could always buy some onsen eggs at a nearby public bath!
I saw onsen eggs for sale at this public bath called “Souyu(総湯)”.
By the way, there is a footbath outside the building, which is free of charge.
There was also a drinkable hot spring, so feel free to drop by.
Wakura Onsen, a hot spring by the sea, is a perfect tourist spot to spend some time.
There are many hot spring towns in Japan, but the seaside hot springs have really beautiful views.
It is a great place to relax, soak in hot springs, and eat delicious food.
The hot springs were really nice, and I felt that this is a very popular hot spring resort in Japan.
In my next blog, I will introduce gourmet food… Enjoy!
